Environnement
The company started off its work in the environmental sector. Already in 1995, our contribution to examining alternatives to the production and consumption of the ozone-depleting substances hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and methyl bromide (CH3Br) was a key element in the adoption by Member States of a new and more stringent regulation of these substances at EU level. Since then, we have carried out work in a number of other fields reflecting the importance of environmental integration in policy development and implementation.Air quality, air emissions, water quality, waste management, nature conservation, sustainable forestry, sustainable development indicators, reporting on the state of the environment, publications (newsletter), GIS and remote sensing applied to the environment are among our areas of expertise. See below for more information on specific fields:

European Topic Centre on Terrestrial Environment (ETC-TE)
Prospect provided the manager of the topic centre and co-ordinator of
the CLC2000 Technical Team. ETC-TE contributes to the definition and
assessment of environmental policies as well as to the integration of
environmental requirements into sectoral policies such as agriculture,
transport, tourism and spatial development. This is done through three
major topics: land cover/land use, soils and coastal zones.

Establishment of GIS based Biodiversity Monitoring System in Estonia
The objective of the project was to produce a Biodiversity Monitoring
Master Plan (BMMP) for Estonia and to establish a cost-effective and
well-operating GIS based national Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS).
The system, developed with TA from Prospect, provided meaningful
information for the integration of biodiversity conservation and
sustainable use considerations into all sectoral plans and strategies.

Formulation of the project “Solid waste management in the urban area of Mascara”
The global objective was to “improve the environmental conservation
through an improved management of the urban solid waste” for Mascara in
Algeria. The specific objectives of the project were (i) to improve the
waste collection and elimination; (ii) the suppression of fly-tipping
and decontamination of the illegal waste dumps; (iii) the creation of
controlled waste dumps in accordance with Algeria’s environmental rules
and standards. Prospect’s role was to formulate the solid waste
management project for the urban area by developing the financial and
technical documents for the project, and evaluating the required
resources (human, material and financial).

Analysis of frameworks and indicators linking the different dimensions of Sustainable Development
This project aimed at providing support to Eurostat for the development -
and adoption by the Task Force - of an analytical policy framework and a
preliminary set of indicators aimed at monitoring progress towards the
implementation of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy. The
objectives of this project were i) to identify an appropriate
statistical framework for SDI that integrates relevant existing
indicator initiatives and ii) to facilitate the use of the indicators
for the analysis of sustainable development in the EU.
